Avascular Necrosis (AVN) of the hip occurs when the blood supply to the femoral head (the ball-shaped upper part of the thigh bone) is disrupted, leading to bone cell death. This condition can cause significant pain, reduced joint function, and eventual joint collapse if not treated promptly.
The symptoms of AVN can vary depending on the stage of the disease but typically include:
Hip Pain: Often described as a dull ache or throbbing pain in the groin, thigh, or buttock.
Reduced Mobility: Difficulty walking, climbing stairs, or performing daily activities.
Stiffness: Loss of hip range of motion.
Pain at Rest: In later stages, the pain may persist even without activity.
AVN can result from various factors, including:
Trauma or Injury: A hip fracture or dislocation can disrupt blood flow to the femoral head.
Steroid Use: Prolonged use of corticosteroids is a leading non-traumatic cause.
Alcohol Consumption: Excessive alcohol use can impair blood supply to the bones.
Medical Conditions: Diseases such as lupus, sickle cell anemia, and Gaucher’s disease increase risk.
Idiopathic Causes: In some cases, no clear cause is identified.
At Palms Physiotherapy, our skilled clinicians use a combination of techniques to diagnose AVN:
Medical History and Physical Examination: Identifying risk factors and assessing joint function.
Imaging Studies: X-rays, MRI, or CT scans to confirm the diagnosis and determine the stage of the disease.
Early diagnosis is critical to prevent progression and preserve joint function.
Our expert team provides a range of non-surgical treatments aimed at reducing pain, improving mobility, and slowing disease progression.
Physiotherapy plays a vital role in managing AVN. Our tailored programs include:
Pain Management Techniques: Reducing inflammation and discomfort.
Strengthening Exercises: Targeting surrounding muscles to support the hip joint.
Range of Motion Exercises: Enhancing flexibility and joint function.
Gait Training: Improving walking mechanics and reducing stress on the hip.
Our Accredited Exercise Physiologists design individualized programs to:
Improve Joint Health: Through weight-bearing and non-weight-bearing exercises.
Enhance Cardiovascular Fitness: Supporting overall health without overloading the hip.
Prevent Muscle Atrophy: Maintaining strength in the lower body.
We provide guidance on:
Weight Management: Reducing pressure on the hip joint.
Activity Modification: Avoiding high-impact activities that can worsen symptoms.
Ergonomic Advice: Adjustments to improve daily living and reduce strain on the hip.
Additional treatments may include:
Hydrotherapy: Low-impact water exercises to reduce joint stress.
Shockwave Therapy: Stimulating bone and tissue healing.
Taping and Bracing: Providing additional hip support.
If conservative management fails to control symptoms or if AVN progresses to advanced stages, surgical options such as core decompression, bone grafting, or total hip replacement may be considered. We collaborate with orthopedic specialists to ensure seamless care if surgery is needed.
While not all cases of AVN are preventable, you can reduce your risk by:
Limiting Alcohol Use: To avoid impairing bone health.
Managing Steroid Use: Only using corticosteroids under medical supervision.
Addressing Medical Conditions: Treating underlying health issues that may contribute to AVN.
Avoiding Hip Trauma: Protecting the hip joint during sports or high-risk activities.
Comprehensive Expertise: Physiotherapists, exercise physiologists, and allied health specialists.
State-of-the-Art Facilities: Rehabilitation gym and therapy equipment tailored for joint care.
Patient-Centered Approach: Holistic care plans designed to meet individual needs.
