Schindler Disease is a rare genetic disorder caused by a deficiency of the N-acetyl-alpha-D-galactosaminidase (alpha-NAGA) enzyme, leading to the abnormal buildup of specific sugars (glycoconjugates) in the body. This accumulation results in progressive damage to the nervous system, muscles, and other tissues.
Schindler Disease is classified into three types:
Type 1 (Infantile): Severe form presenting in infancy with developmental delays, muscle weakness, and seizures.
Type 2 (Kanzaki Disease): Milder, adult-onset form with skin lesions, angiokeratomas, and mild neurological symptoms.
Type 3 (Intermediate): A form between Types 1 and 2, with variable progression.
Common symptoms of Schindler Disease include:
Developmental delays and loss of milestones
Muscle stiffness or weakness
Seizures
Vision and hearing impairments
Cognitive decline
While there is no cure for Schindler Disease, multidisciplinary therapies can help manage symptoms, improve functionality, and support overall well-being.
